German hardy porcelain garlic is a favorite here in the northeast. Also known as German extra hardy, Northern White, and German White it is a Hardneck variety from the porcelain family. A reliable and easy to grow variety in all sorts of soil types including clay rich soils, each bulb typically has 4-6  extra large cloves per head. As the name suggests, it's very hardy and does exceptionally well in our cold and wet Vermont climate and soils.

Flavor is similar to Katterman Porcelain, raw it is pungent and spicy mellowing out when cooked. Since it has large cloves, it is easy to peel and perfect for roasting whole. Produces beautiful thick scapes in mid June. Stores very well in proper storage conditions, 6-8 months.

Seed is graded primarily for health, size, and clove uniformity. Seed is over 2" in diameter and typically will contain around 4-10 bulbs of garlic (25-40 cloves) per pound. We ship out largest heads first so order early. Culinary garlic is graded as eating garlic, sized around 1.5-1.8" in diameter. Typically 11+ bulbs in a pound. All garlic can be planted and/or eaten but suggest if you are planting to select seed grade.

Seed Garlic has been tested negative for Garlic Bloat Nematode, White Rot, and other diseases from the University of Maine. Certified Organic by Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF).

0.5 lb Seed Grade Large Bulbs $13 (2-3 bulbs)

1 lb Seed Grade Large Bulbs $26 (5-6 bulbs)

1 lb Culinary Garlic Small/Medium size $18 (7 bulbs)

reflects current sizes as of 9/16/24

*Please note that for 2024 we have limited quantities available as we hold back our seed to multiply it for next year. Please see Katterman garlic which is available in higher quantities and very similar to German Hardy.

Our farm does our best to accurately represent the garlic crop but pre-selling it in July before we are able to fully grade it in September may result in differing quantities and sizes. We appreciate your understanding.

German Hardy earns the name

I've been playing around with planting dates the last few years and no matter what, German Hardy has performed well through some wildly unpredictable fall/winter/spring weather

The best seed garlic ever!

Last year I grew a variety of seed garlic from a Quill Hill Farm and two other companies. The only garlic that grew was yours! It was an experiment I won’t do again!

Best German Stiff neck garlic on the planet

I always love Quill Hill Garlic and am never disappointed in my plants, which come up beautifully in the spring. By far, the best garlic I have ever had. I use the scapes too!
